The Grand Buddha at Leshan (Sichuan Province, China) is the largest ancient stone carved image of Buddha in the world, standing 71 metres in height. It is located at the foot of Mt. Lingyun, where the Minjiang, Dadu and Qingyi Rivers meet. This edifice was constructed to control dangerous currents (previously causing many local boat owners to drown), for flood mitigation, and also worship by the monk, Haitong, in the Tang dynasty.Construction took place between 713 AD and 803 AD, and the finished project has proven successful in meeting the goals set by Haitong long ago.I went to Sichuan Province to teach at an English Summer Camp at the University of Electronic Science and Technology, during summer, 2006, and visited the Grand Buddha at Le Shan during that time.
