More commonly referred to as simply the Appalachian Trail, or even just the "AT," this trail was the first to be designated a National Scenic Trail, in 1968. Stretching more than 2,175 miles along the Appalachian Mountains, it is within a day's drive of two-thirds of the U.S. population, and is visited by four million people each year. It traverses 14 states on its way from Springer Mountain, Georgia, to Katahdin in Maine, and passes through more than 75 different federal and state forests and park lands. Its 250,000 acres are managed by the National Park Service, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, and thousands of volunteers.
