I'd dreamed of hiking the Appalachian Trail for a dozen or so years, but I'd grown up in a family too pragmatic to do much more than dream. All my life I'd followed the rules and worried what others thought of me. I'd always been shy and easily intimidated, afraid to try anything new. For most of those years, I didn't really believe the dream would ever come true.Then I got divorced and my children grew into self-sufficient adults. It was a turning point in my life.
