Thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail was the greatest experience of my life. When I started, I was prepared as well as I could be, and the hike unfolded exactly as it needed to for me to learn what I needed to learn at that point in my life. I wouldn't have changed a thing about it. I'd love to go back out there and do it again, but I know it wouldn't be the same. I'm different, my fellow hikers would be different, and my lessons would be different. But now, having actual feet-on thru-hike experience, I know some things that would make the hike even better. Here are some things I'd do differently on the next Appalachian Trail thru-hike.

Being paid to pursue your dream would seem an ideal scenario, but when avid mountain climber and acclaimed journalist Jon Krakauer joined an expedition to climb Mt. Everest, his longtime dream turned into a nightmare. On assignment for Outside magazine, Krakauer had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. He couldn't be sure he would summit the mountain, but he knew he'd remember the experience the rest of his life. He just had no idea those memories would be haunting.

Many people thru-hike the Appalachian Trail at a turning point in their lives. They've graduated from college, or gotten divorced, or retired. For me, hiking the trail was the turning point. It was the first time I'd actually pursued a dream instead of just talking about it. It was the first time I'd put my writing out in public, as I had dozens of people receiving my trip reports by email. It was the first time I'd really, really, challenged myself. I learned so much on that hike, and it changed my life.

Tori-Shogi (Japanese Chess Variant, sometimes translated as 'Bird Shogi') is one of the more recent members of a family of chess games developed in Japan, as it was invented by Ohashi Soei in the late 18th century. It is played on a 7x7 board by 2 players who start the game with 16 flat 5-sided pieces each, marked with Japanese kanji characters, all of which represent different types of birds. When a player captures an opponents piece it becomes his own, and can be dropped back on the board later, so the number of pieces each player owns can decrease and increase during a typical game.
