Hei matau are traditionally carved Maori bone or jade (greenstone) fish hooks. The Maori people wore the Hei matau necklaces as a talisman during their travels.
The Maori fish hook design represent strength, determination, good luck, peace, good health, prosperity and is thought to provide a safe passage across water.
